Possible online course system for scientific scholarly writing services August 19, 2009

The Academy supports the idea of the proposed free-online scientific writing course system explored at an earlier Academy workshop. These online writing services would be a relevant intervention of the ASSAf Scholarly Publishing Programme on the capacity development side of the programme.

The issue of such online writing services was discussed during the National Scholarly Editors’ Forum meetings held in October 2008 and June 2009, where general support was expressed by the Forum members present. The project had, however, for a variety of regrettable reasons, not moved further than the previous stages of identifying a suitable four-tier model, namely:

The workshop held in 2008 had resolved to augment the services of the existing institutional writing centres in this catalytic manner. ASSAf intends to make a follow-up proposal on this matter. The first step is to get a person (or persons) to lead the process, and thereafter convene a Steering Panel. The writing centres would be beneficial to editors in reducing editorial workloads and increasing the flow of well-written papers, and reassured editors that ASSAf was serious about the initiative.
